Chronic Post-Surgical Pain (CPSP)

What is Chronic Post-Surgical Pain (CPSP)?

Chronic Post-Surgical Pain is pain caused by tissue trauma from surgery that stimulates hypersensitivity of the central nervous system. The pain can also manifest in areas not directly treated by the surgical procedure. A classic experience for these patients is that after the procedure, they feel like the pain “Got Worse.” The instigating surgery can be minor (dental) or major (triple bypass).

FBSS DermatomesPost-surgical neuropathic pain affects up to 50% of patients who suffer pain after surgery. It typically affects nerve roots near the site of surgery, example shown on the dermatome chart above.
