What is Sciatica?

Sciatic pain is pain that radiates along the nerve that runs from your spinal cord to your buttocks and hips, down the back of your legs and into your foot. One of the first steps in dealing with sciatica is to determine what the source of pain is: (1) an acute impingement (herniated disc pressing on the nerve), or (2) a more chronic nerve condition where the nerves have become overexcited and won’t calm down (neuropathy). Sciatic pain can vary from a dull ache to a sharp shock-like pain. Typically, chronic sciatic pain is felt along one side of the body as over-excited nerves work overtime, having lost the normal ability to calm down after injury.
